Castle Tours: White Otter Castle

The White Otter Castle was built in 1903, by Jimmy McOuat on the shores of White Otter Lake which is nestled in what is now the Turtle River Provincial Park. This breathtaking structure which is fondly referred to as “the Castle”, is a true testament to determination and grit and remains standing today, more than 100 years after it was constructed to remind us that we are capable of anything we set our minds to. As noted in many history books, Jimmy built the Castle singlehandedly, bringing materials down from Ignace, Ontario through terrain that would routinely turn even the most seasoned bush-person around for civilization.
Want to visit the Castle? We would be happy to take you on a private tour! Leaving from the Lodge, you and your group would travel by boat across Clearwater West Lake, over the portage, and up to the north end of White Otter lake where you can get out and walk around this national historic site and experience the magnitude of Jimmy’s feat first hand!
Not only will you visit the Castle, but as time permits we will also take you to the long abandoned POW/Logging camps camps, pictographs and Mediterranean Falls! Each tour is customized for the group and may not be exactly as others. For instance, if you would prefer to spend a bit more time relaxing on a private beach, swimming at Mediterranean Falls, or poking around the remnants of a POW/Logging camp, we can make some adjustments to the schedule to ensure that your groups wishes are accommodated to the best of our ability and time allotment.
What to Bring?
All personal items needed for a day on the water, including but not limited to any medications that you may need for an excursion that lasts anywhere from 4-6 hours. You will need to ensure that you have adequate water and refreshments (non-alcoholic) as well as your lunch and any other items that are necessary for an enjoyable day. Make sure you bring towels, swimsuits, sunscreen, and bug spray! You never know when the spirit will move you to take a swim!
